My dad taught me the full windsor, as he seldom wore a tie, and when he did it was a fairly formal affair. This was the only tie i knew until I was about 28. As such, I've always come to see the four-in-hand as kind of sloppy looking. Obviously, this puts me in the minority. However, I have since learned what I see as a pretty good compromise: shelby knots. Not quite as stuffy as the full windsor, but a little sharper looking that the 4-i-h.
@NikySportsPromotion 3 is wide? 3.25" is about classic width. its the garish trend that ties are getting thinner thinner... 2.75 and down... looks tacky to go with those tacky department store suits with miniature lapels...
Why have ties became so wide? 3 or more inches, and not even only at the bottom, but these ones that come out of the knot almost 3 inches wide? 2.5" or less, no obvious thinning that distinguishes the neck band and blade, practically no visible outward slant is the perfect shape for a tie. Works perfect with this knot and with a good shirt or suit, forms a classic that will never go out of style
When the guy unties his tie at around 2:15 - he does it WRONG. You should untie a tie going in the reverse steps as when you tied it, because you will pull on the seams and material and over time the tie will lose its shape and/or get damaged.
