Upper Cut Productions was commissioned by BAM Nuttall and Network Rail to film a rail bridge reconstruction project in Reading, during the Christmas period of 2011.

3 weather proofed time lapse cameras were installed in various locations to capture the progress of the new bridge construction - they have taken nearly 1/4million photographs over the last 6 months.

This video shows a very rough edit of the bridge replacement which took place between 24.12.11 and 28.12.11. The footage will be broadcast by the BBC and ITV local news on 30th December 2011.

The full edited video showing the complete project will be uploaded here in January 2012.

  • The construction of the bridge and bridge transporter will be shown in the full edit in about 10 days time. Various time lapse cameras were positioned around the site for approximately 6 months capturing every stage of the project. Processing the thousands of photographs is quite time consuming but we are working hard. We were filming a larger bridge recon project with 4 time lapse cams and ground crews at Battersea this Christmas aswell. The video should be finished in a few weeks time.

  • We used DSLR cameras with wide lenses in weather proofed cabinets. The cameras are mains powered and totally self sufficient (internet connection with password protected live updates, computer, climate control, hard drives etc...)

We will definitely set the final edit to music (not sure about the Sorcerer's Apprentice though!) This video is only a very quick edit (done overnight) in time for a broadcast deadline.

  • What a fantastic video depicting a human engineering marvel and feat. Quite the accomplishment with today's technology and earth-manipulating techniques. Thank you so very much for sharing this! Thumbs up!

  • @MegaBrian57 It probably came from the other side. There is pretty wide road there (Reading festival takes place there every year).

  • for some reason it seems way too much work for something that simple.. work smarter not harder

  • Fabulous film, so glad you had the forethought to do it. I put up exhibitions in Reading in The Retreat Pub and I wonder if you might have some stills from the video that we could put up there?

  • Thanks for the feedback, the bridge transporter (constructed on site from a kit) sounds as fascinating as the bridge build itself! Its a shame that it wasn't included in the video!

    many thanks

  • @MegaBrian57 Yes, they arrive on site almost in kit form and are assembled in the compound. They can be made to almost any size for almost any job.

And controlled by a joystick no bigger than that used for an remote control car... :)

  • Should get the traffic to the traffic Jams on the IDR and Caversham Bridge quicker :0)

    Great film really enjoyed it

  • @MegaBrian57 probably came in pieces and assembled on site
