The duo is very tight on this Balkan inspired dance by Viktor Uzur

The Richter Uzur Duo: Brad Richter, guitar and Viktor Uzur, cello.
About the performance (liner note excerpted from their CD, String Theory):
Carpathian Kolo, Viktor Uzur
Viktor was born and raised in the Sumadia i Pomoravlje area of Serbia, known for some of the most virtuosic accordion and bayan players in the world. From an early age he was fascinated by these self-taught musicians who played incredibly complex folk music filled with idiomatic ornamentation often in the form of a Kolo - a dance from the countries of the Balkan Peninsula traditionally in a fast 2/4 meter. The dance itself is performed in a circle and increases in speed and intensity throughout. Viktor started Carpathian Kolo as a piano piece in 1994 inspired by Romanian and Moldavian gypsy music two cultures connected to the Carpathian Mountains. In 2001 the inner sections were added and the piece was expanded to encompass dances from several Balkan countries each with a slightly different character and harmonic/melodic language but unified through a strong pulse and constantly accelerating pace which are signatures of the Kolo. In this instrumentation the cello has the character of the gypsy violin virtuosi while the guitar reflects a cimbalom, a traditional folk instrument whose players are renowned for their incredibly fast plucking.

  • bravo!!! unbelievable!!!

  • I am Moldavian Romanian. Kolo is "hora" in Romanian.

  • "Lautari" are the Gypsy maestros.

  • The more I watch/listen to this, the more incredible it is. I recognized at least two Romanian songs in it. "Ciocirlia" is one. I can not believe what you can do with guitar and cello, "lautari" would be so proud of you. I am, for sure.

  • Very beautiful!!! Thank you!!! We do too had in Romania self taught Gypsies that were geniuses at their instruments. They would pick up the violin when they were barely bigger than the violin themselves and play it like it was an extension of their body and mind.

This piece is just SO beautiful and artfully and well played!!! Unbelievable!!! It contains so many different songs in one and it does keep the specific of each instrument original to each regional piece. Just amazing!!!

  • this shit is metal
