@cucarachasboludas You don't know what you're talking about. The base Encore 1.4 L engine produced 56 hp, compared to the 11's 59 hp. 3 hp is hardly "way less". It wasn't 'underpowered' because of "CRAP gasoline available in the usa": it was underpowered because it made LESS THAN 60 HP.

as long as you keep the maintence up on these cars and change the timing belt religousley there good cars. there just tempermental there not bad cars

there not that bad of a car there just very tempermental my mom had a 1983 renault encore 2 door standard shift. It ran good then the timing belt broke and bent the valves so my dad rebuilt the engine and bought a new timing belt he had a choice between a cheap and expensive belt he picked the cheap timing belt and put it on. The car ran good for about one or two weeks then the belt broke and bent the valves again. lesson learned buy the more expensive timing belt for renaults.

I often read some comments from americans who call european cars sold in usa "underpowered" so i began to read about the renault encore and came to the following conclusion
the renault encore engine(known as renault 11 everywhere) was designed to run on RON 98 gasoline but because of the CRAP gasoline available in the usa they had to lower both dynamic and static original compression ratios (10:1) to 8:1(because of the CRAP gasoline )That means way less torque and way less hp "underpowered"
