First part is true, but the part about the rabbit dying is a myth, one that played well in a lot of movies, sitcoms, & jokes. (Typically, just the words, "The rabbit died", without any direct reference to pregnancy, would be enough for the audience to get the message.)

The fact is that the rabbit ALWAYS died: they had to cut her open to examine her ovaries.
