  • It seems to me that that the point of the difference engine is to sort through all of the many innovations that may come in the next century, pick the best ones, and then diffuse them? Is that right?

  • Pretty much. In that sense, it's similar to say, a venture-capital firm, but instead of providing start-up money to a single company, the Difference Engine provides publicity and marketing for new technologies.

  • In some ways, that fact makes it an even better example.

    I did each frame in PowerPoint, and then used a screen capture utility to record me clicking through each page in time with my voice recording. The screen recorder automatically saved it in a format youtube can use.

    Toilet paper is probably a very bad example. Toilet paper was invented in China in the 6th century in in common use centuries before it was patented by us. [Source: Wikipedia].
