In surveyor, under the "objects" category there is a button that looks like a grabber/claw, you can use this to find an item on a layout quickly. Once you've pressed on this button, you click on whatever object you have to find, and it will show up on the objects screen. It also works in splines, tracks and trains. Have you tried that?
