PlusLevee Breaks Add to Midwest Flood ProblemsLevee Breaks Add to Midwest Flood ProblemsThe Associated PressPeople continue to battle high water in Indiana, Illinois, Indiana and Iowa. (June 10)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] (VIDEO OF BROKEN LEVY FROM AIR BOAT)Ad another state to the list of those deluged with high water. Two levee breaks have caused water to pour across 50 square miles of an Illinois county which borders already hard-hit Indiana. The Embarrass River exploded through right here spilling millions of gallons of water.(VIDEO OF SWAMPED CAMPERS AND STRANDED JIM MCCLASKEY)But the Lawrence Rod and Gun Club was in the flood path.RV's are swamped and Jim McClasky is stranded on someone else's property.JIM MCCKLASKEY/STRANDED IN LAWRENCEVILLE"WE COME IN THE BACK ROAD. IT WASN'T BAD WHEN WE COME THROUGH. WE FOOLED AROUND ABOUT AN HOUR OR SO OVER THERE. WHEN WE TRIED TO LEAVE. WE TURNED AROUND IT GOT TOO DEEP."MARK CARLSON/STANDUPThis is normally farmland as far as the eye can see. When the Embarrass River levy broke, the landscaped turned into a lake. [Notes:map pull out effect?]In addition to Illinois, severe flooding extends across several midwest states: Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin. [Notes:wisc] The village of Gays Mills, Wisconsin was inundated during the weekend, just 10 months after another devastating flood left residents working to rebuild homes and businesses. The swollen Kickapoo River engulfed nearly the entire town. Almost a quarter of the 625 residents have evacuated. Officials say the very survival of the town is at stake.(SOT: LARRY MCCARN/GAYS MILLS VILLAGE PRESIDENT) I'M REALLY CONCERNED ABOUT IT, YES. I AM NOT SURE HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL STAY OR EVEN COME BACK OR EVEN THE BUSINESSES, WHAT'LL HAPPEN TO THEM.Wisconsin's governor will ask for a federal disaster declaration later this week. About 70 miles north, in Lake Delton, families are surveying the damage left behind after Lake Delton overflowed, then emptied. It swept away several homes in the process. (sot: TIM FROMM/lost home)15:21:01 JUST NOT SURE WHAT TO DO AT THIS POINT BECAUSE IF YOU LOOK OVER WE DON'T EVEN HAVE LAND ANYMORE. [Notes:pool]In Elnora, Indiana, the breadth of the problem can been seen from the air. The White River has overrun it's banks--reaching 16 feet above flood stage in some places. The state got two inches of rain Monday, on top of the 11 inches received in places over the weekend [Notes:woi] Iowans continue to sandbag to try to hold back the water. The governor has declared emergencies in 31 counties. The downpours that led to all this flooding are also impacting crops. Flooded corn fields have made it difficult for farmers to plant, pushing corn prices to record highs on commodities exchanges. ___ ___, The Associated Press.

  • Sorry, flood-ridden folks. You'll have to come up with a bigger disaster than this for our goverment to even care. We're too busy fighting, and thowing away lives money and on a worthless boogyman war on the other side of the planet. Nice try, though.

  • Levees are NOT natural. More and more of them have been made over the years to block the river from going into it's ( yes natural) flood plains. It is then FORCED to follow the same path it has as a river with NO ROOM to ever swell its banks. THATS how you get major flooding in what id NOW settled areas

  • i dont get it. i know floods are a tragedy but i dont see anybody commenting 'you have sinned and you shall feel gods wrath' or some such on these video's, though 2 days after australia's worst floods in history we had arrogant americans trolling all over the place? i know this seems mean but karma's an absolute bitch. i honestly hope nobody gets hurt over there :( prayers from Queensland

  • some of this was perdicted so why did the people wait so long to protect what they had ???

  • Yes...

    Twice...

    Who?

  • Was that a snappy pun? "You don't have a glue." If so, it was funny.

It's pretty sad that it took you a year to come up with it though. ;)

  • did he die?

  • You don't have a glue !

  • These poor people with their flood properties. If they want to sell and get out they will get investors to buy and if they have insurance they can walk away with some decent cash. Flood Properties is a place where they can sell damaged houses without paying commission. Some real estate people put their stuff on there too. Investors are looking to buy this stuff!! Hope this helps!

  • Or instead of folding their hands, it would be better for them to put them to work.

  • agreed
