@PAULOcbi In 2010, the poverty line was $20,000 for a household of four. The first person needed to earn less than $10,000 and any additional less than $5,000. Again before taxes. In 2011, the poverty line went up to a little over $22,000 for a household of four. You are right that the poverty rate in the US is officially a little over 15%, but I wasn't calculating the percentage of people living below the official poverty line; only living on $10,000 or less before taxes.

@LadyRavenhaire uhm, thats funny according to the US Census Bureau poverty is up from 14.9% in 2009 to 15.1% in 2010 ,closer to 1/6 than the 1/3 you avered. You`ve doubled the US Census Bureau`s calculations for some reason ???,I dont know why `cos its easily accessible info online at the USCensusBureau Website.Anyway ,either way its unacceptable for USA,its way too high considering the wealth of the USA.

@orbis2009 You speak about Gulags. We have over 3 million prisoners incarcerated today. More than any other country in the world, including China & India with populations over 1 billion. Prisons are gulags. We have thousands of political prisoners in US jails. To name a few: Mumia, Leonard Pelletier, Troy Davis, etc..In fact, in the mid-west, the US government incarcerated & called in front of a grand jury anti-war activists on the charges of sedition for being antiwar.

@orbis2009 Are you aware that our government allowed nearly 9 million people died in 1932 during the Dust Bowl out West because of the fact that the banks wanted that fertile land of the mid-west for themselves to create agro-businesses? How many thousands starve in this country every year from dire poverty? How about the millions who die from wars of aggression like in Iraq, Afganistan, Vietnam, Philipines, etc... China has never gone to war to take over other country's resources like the US.

@PAULOcbi I work with the US Census Bureau. 1/3 of the US population lives on $10,000 or less before taxes. That sounds like poverty to me, especially as the poorest Americans tend to be taxed at 20%. Moreover 67% of Americans don't have $1,000 in savings the event of an emergency. You may not be hungry, but there are many who are. And yes people do starve to death in this country or die from exposure from being evicted or having their homes foreclosed!!!

@fightforyourrights9 "poverty stricken majority" ???? CHECK YOUR FACTS,CHECK YOUR FACTS. The percentage of Americans living in poverty or destitution is hardly a majority,in fact it is under %5. Compared to other 3rd world nations with %40-%70 living in poverty. No assets doesnt mean poverty. While I agree the wealthy %1-%2 of the USA should spread the wealth and capatilism aint perfect, nobody starves if they dont want to in the USA.
