One of the guns is purple, so that it can be seen how deep it got into the galaxy. They yellow cells you see are new cells, i.e. cells which appeared this cycle. Note that two state oscillators are not considered to produce new cells.

When purple life fails to produce any new cells, it "dies". Purple cells are left, but they now do not have the ability to color blue cells and instead can be taken over by ordinary blue cells. In this exact case, if you watch carefully, as purple life died off, next cycle it so happened that a new cell appeared, giving rise to new generations of blue cells - a pretty uncommon thing to happen.
