Tent cities are often perceived as unsafe, unsanitary, and unsightly, and a symptom of the problem of homelessness rather than a part of the solution. However, modern tent cities like the 10-year-old Dignity Village in Portland Oregon have become a model of success in building a socially and environmentally sustainable village with the goal of providing humane, dignified, and democratic shelter.
The "Dignity Village Is" video is a sample of what is included in over two hours of short videos in the Tent Cities Toolkit DVD. The Tent Cities Toolkit is an interactive video-enhanced multimedia tool that uses the visionary example of Dignity Village as a case study to explore the ways in which democratically governed micro-housing communities like Dignity Village can be a part of the plan to end homelessness. The Tent Cities Toolkit is part of a larger grassroots effort to rally Americans to pursue dignity and freedom in US policies to end homelessness. To join the Golden Door effort, go to www.tentcitiestoolkit.org.
Oh no! People living within their means! Someone call the cops and the health department!

@patsaxon If only everyone was so lucky for that to be an option. Unfortunately, not all people are so blessed to have a loving family or friend's who will help them. Sometimes they do, but life and relationships are complicated, sometimes bridges of been burned. Whatever the reason, people do fall through the cracks and without a support network to help them they fall into extreme poverty and very often will never have a way to claw their way back out.

Family and friends should be helping out those in need than be homeless.

I have seen some reports on the "Dignity Villages" some are well run, compliant with the city (They really try to work through any issue with them) and then there's those who just flop and drop. Anywhere they want and then begins the trashing of the area.
It's the second types who have made "Dignity Villages" a thing to fear and dislike. Sadly, the good ones rarely make news as they don't cause problems!
