Duke is a 4 year old ex-hunting beagle. We adopted him at the age of 3 and within a few months of owning him he started exhibiting severe on-leash aggression to other dogs (also known as being dog reactive). He used to howl at dogs blocks away and pull and lunge and growl at them and even try to bite them if we got close enough. We worked with a behavioralist who helped us using only POSITIVE training methods (no Cesar Milan 'energy' BS or evil things like choke chains or yelling)

  • hi everyone

its been 2+ years since this video. i have some comments on it. firstly, i would have used a clicker. "yes" is not as effective. secondly, i would have not had my hand in my treat bag. if you keep your hand in there or have the treat too visible, having food in your hand becomes part of the cue for the behavior. this creates food dependency. it is very different to click, then reach for a treat, then deliver, than it is to dangle food in advance.

  • Its been almost two years now since this video was taken. We are now working on having Duke be able to meet dogs on leash. Same training principles. We can take him anywhere we want now.

  • Would he do this without treats? Early on in his training, no, of course not. A year later, absolutely. He is counter conditioned, infallibly, to look at his handler when he sees a dog on the street.

  • If you dog won't take food from you while on the street or park, you need to focus on the basics. Practice at home (see my video response of Elmo) so they get used to looking at you when you call their name.

  • A year later and Duke is almost all better! He still gets a bit nervous around other dogs but he plays very well off leash and can meet many dogs on leash as well.

  • Great job! Duke did extremely well and I was impressed after reading your info about how he used to be reactive to other dogs! Glad you used positive training methods!

  • Would he do this if you weren't giving him treats?
