@belisariusorb mmm, but next to these post-industrial landscapes turned yuppie playgrounds the estates which used to house their workers often still stand having benefitted little from the regeneration while property developers and consultants have lined their pockets with tax-payers money.

OK he's taking the piss out of all the cliches in urban renewal programmes. But without them post-industrial landscapes would be rusting fields of girders. And today they're yuppie playgrounds. Yuppies are often the sons and daughters of working class people who worked in those industrial sites. Their children may be future Jonathan or Joannathana Meadeses. Better than Thunderdome, right?

I love Meades but he has to recognise that he's a self-loathing Englishman. Not everything he thinks so bad about England is true. Example: Heysel, where he compares Liverpool with Marseilles. Fact: Liverpool has cleaned up. Fact: Marseilles remains one of the nastiest shitholes in Europe, certainly in France.
