These clips show a large skylight over the active tube. The skylight is about 1/4 mile from the ocean entry. Skylights develop when a weak section of roof collapses into the tube or a surge in the lava supply forces a section of the tube roof upward. Skylights usually crust over in a matter of days or weeks. Also shown is the grim fate of a runaway umbrella.
The skylight is located near Kalapana at the end of Highway 130 on the Big Island of Hawaii. This area is outside the east boundary of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

When I go to Hawaii, I'm telling ya I'm buying a whole bag of various objects and one by one, throw them into one of these skylights. Hours of entertainment!

uh...isn't the top of the lava tube very unstable since theres nothing supporting it
altruistichedonist 1 year ago
@altruistichedonist The roof of the tube is formed as a natural arch, which is one of the strongest formations in nature or man made structures. Most skylights, such as this, are caused by a surge of lava pushing the roof out and not by collapsing in.

what/where is this?
how come it doesnt cave in?
wirechair 2 years ago
This is a lava tube which carries lava seven miles from its source in Kilauea to the ocean near Kalapana. Lava tubes form when the lava solidifies along the cooler surfaces on the ground and then along the top, much like water freezes on the surface of a river. The roof of the lava tube is very stable because it is formed in the shape of an arch, which is one of nature's strongest structures.

Great footage of an ongoing event! Especially like the music chosen for the video. Had the chance to visit the area this past February...my footprints have already been erased by the newest flow. What a wonder to be able to visit on a daily basis. Keep it coming.
