I can't help but wonder if this was influenced (even slightly) by that old Twilight Zone episode "The Shelter".

It wasn't. I've never seen it. However, I've had several people mention it so, I'd really like to see it and compare the two. It'd be interesting to see what similarities there actually are - and what differences...
