The tide turned for Blu-Ray because of the PS3. The only reason it didn't happen sooner is because the PS3 was too overpriced when it first came out. When the price lowered thats when HD-DVD was finished. For nearly the same price of a standalone Blu-Ray Player, they could have one + a game console.
Exact same thing happened with the PS2 and DVD. Just took longer because of the price.
The 360 HD-DVD drive was never going to work. People want stuff straight out of the box, not pricey add-ons.

Sony had it in the bag for one reason the ps3 because even if hd-dvd was the winner the ps3 was still going to be around and the ps3 games were still going to be blu-rays and sony has more friends in the movie biz.
