Do it yourself and save a shitload of money!

Don't spend up to $8 for a pack of cigarettes when you can make your own pack in minutes for right around a buck!

I'll be evaluating the "New" cut of Chris Cross (so called) Pipe Tobacco which they claim will work in injector machines. Is it their old cigarette tobacco re-branded as Pipe Tobacco to get around the tax increase? Look and make up your own mind.

Plus, I'll show you how to use a Top-O-Matic injector to make a perfect cigarette every time, all for less than a buck a pack.

  • RYO-FYI fact #1: A premium brand cigarette usually contains no more than 50% pure tobacco. Up to 30% of what is in a cigarette is known as “Reconstituted Tobacco”. Like the ingredients in a cheap hot dog, reconstituted tobacco is the scraps, stems, mid-veins and sweepings. This is all shredded, liquefied, rolled into sheets, dried, finely cut, and added to the cigarette. Typically, all your flavorings and chemicals are added to reconstituted tobacco.

  • RYO-FYI fact #2: The balance of a manufactured cigarette is generally made up of what is called “Reclaimed Tobacco”. This is tobacco reclaimed from outdated, returned or cigarettes rejected during the manufacturing process. (Completed cartons are weighed before being sold for retail. If the weight isn’t within a certain spec, the entire carton is rejected.)

  • RYO-FYI fact #3:. A sneaky little trick cigarette manufacturers use to make their cigarettes “Appear” full is to expand the tobacco using gas. This creates what is known as “Dead Air Space”, or DAS. If you’ve ever wondered why they burn so darn fast, now you know. The cheaper the cigarette, the faster it burns. Homemade cigarettes have little DAS and therefore last much longer. As a matter of fact, some RYO smokers will complain they last just too darn long!

  • RYO-FYI fact #4: The ammonia used in manufactured cigarettes basically “Free-bases” the nicotine. This rushes the nicotine through your system faster, but also withdraws faster causing you to want another cigarette sooner than expected. Because RYO tobacco contains no ammonia, many RYO smokers report smoking less.

  • To put it simply if you are going to smoke, this is the way to go. IMO the cheap $5 hand injectors work just as well as the $75 automatic injectors. Too bad the government has already caught wind of cigarette smokers using pipe tobacco in cigs. The price of pipe tobacco will skyrocket next tax increase.

  • @HarlequinBuckeye - The $5 hand-held injectors are nice when you need to make a quick smoke on-the-go. However, they are slow and cumbersome if you're sitting down to make a few packs! In addition, they are mainly plastic and you can count on their production life to be quite short.

  • I'm thinking the injector blade is dull and can't drive the tabbaco through w/out jaming. I'm going to have to purchase another machine before I go nuts. The cheapest pk is now $6.50 for Pall-Mall. The city of Worcester,Mass. wants to outlaw the machines, they allready outlawed the sale of cigs in drug stores like CVS & Wagreens. I saw how easy u just rolled two cigs and boy do I miss those days. I've not been able to w/my T2 I thought it was because pipe tabbaco but u do fine. Thanks 4 video

  • I enjoyed your video you made in Aug 2009 about rolling your own cigs. I have the T2 machine and I have a terible time rolling cigs. I have alot at the tip and little in the middle of the tube which you talk/explain in your video. The trouble u have whith reg tabaco is the trouble I have w/ pipe tabaco. My machine jams up,never a full cig, fall out. Now I had a Premier roll machine very similar to the Top machine u use in you video and I rolled reg tabbaco for 2 years(2004-2006).Not expensiv then

  • Hey, does this machine work with unfiltered 75s tubes?

  • Thank you!!!!

  • Very good video and thanks for doing it. I purchased one of the units and have found that it makes a much better cigarette and is much more consistent than the electric machines i was using at the local smoke store. The top-o-matic packs the cigarette full, unlike the electric which didn't always do that. With this machine, and your tips, makes a perfect cigarette each and every time. And using the foil-easy no fuss-no muss clean-up. Gonna smoke-this is the way to go !

  • cut costs by breaking the habit.

  • This really is the best ryo machine. I tried one of the electric rollers and it was quick but the lit head kept falling off, cig would go out and packing was inconsistant. Gone back to the Topomatic. I use pipe tobacco. Cheaper than cig tobacco and I really don't notice any taste or burn difference. I heard "big brother" wants to tax or prevent the sale of ryo machines. Are you ready for this?? They claim that ryo is considered manufacturing and you must be licensed to do so.

  • @darthbozo, I hope I can explain this correctly. I bought a pkg of wooden scewers, I got the cheap thin ones. Using the scewer, dig out the tobacco that is stuck inside the slot where the metal plate is pushed (via the crank handle) in to compact the tobacco. That should do it.

  • LOL, Howabout $10 - $12 per pack here in NY! I said "screw that!" and started making my own, just like you! Love paying just $1.85 per pack!!!! I found Cig Tobacco labeled as "pipe tobacco", no sweetened taste. (plain). Best thing I ever did. Of course, I should quit, hehe, BUT, $1.85 is a hell of a lot better than $11.00 per pack! And it's a better tasting smoke. No crappy fillers, or other junk in them. Should have done this years ago!
