I'll ask my boss on Monday, but I'm curious; what are the mini sponges for? Also, how can you tell where the pterygium ends and the conjuctiva begins? And honestly, I don't know how anyone can sit through a procedure like this. I'd be just terrified the freezing would wear off, or I would accidentally move my eye in the middle of it!

I had mine removed just the other day. It took a total of 15 minutes. I was in the prep area for 30 minutes because the anesthesiologist arrived late. Over all it was a pretty good operation. I have to take off from work for a week though.

I give so much credit to these surgeons ! I could never do something like this. I had mine remove 5 days ago. Fingers crossed it doesn't grow back...

@saved42
The procedure is painless. In Ophthalmology we do almost all of our surgery with the patient awake and much of it is done with topical anesthesia only as was done here.

The patient can see the light from the microscope but feels nothing.

There are appropriate indications to remove a pterygium. If it is causing irritation, affecting vision or is a serious cosmetic issue it is reasonable to remove it. With proper technique it is very safe and effective to do surgery.
