Mother's Day and flowers go hand in hand. But when you send your mother this symbol of your love, what message are you sending to mothers in poor, flower-growing countries around the world?
In many flower farms in countries like Ecuador, pregnant women work long hours and are often exposed to harsh, dangerous chemicals. Many are afraid to let their company know they are pregnant for fear they will lose their job. And when they have the baby, they have little to no assurance that a job will be waiting for them when they come back.
That's at many farms. But not all of them.
A better world is blooming. Fair Trade Certified flowers ensure that women/mothers are treated with the respect they deserve. They are required to have breaks so they can rest. They are forbidden from working with chemicals. And when they have their baby, they not only get a maternity leave, but they also get their job back - with reduced hours so they can spend time with their newborn.
The rest of the flower farms in the world need to come in to line. But it will only happen if consumers here in the United States do something about it.
This Mother's Day, make your flowers Fair Trade Certified. Help us
spread the word by passing this video on to others who might be purchasing flowers for their mother or spouse this year.
