I completely agree. If it were up to me this wouldn't be an issue. The only point I was making was why not be amenable to a political approach which may be the most expedential way to go about it.
Thanks. I mean, I'm straight and married and if it were up to me gays would be able to marry. I have no hang-ups along those lines but alot of people do and they vote. I'm simply saying there is the way things "should" be and there are they way things are. If legislation for civil unions would help expedite the process why not do it that way. Plus it's easier to add amendments to existing legislation ie. start simple then add to it. You are right it's unfortunate it has to be so complicated.
Where does marriage originally come from? I mean, from where does it originate - our general perception of what a marriage is? Why do we get married? If we lived in a forest with no religious influences of books at all - would we want to marry in the same way as people marry today?
My only question about this whole issue is why gays and lesbians are not more open to the Idea of "civil unions" because it seems to me that would be the easiest legislation to pass. I understand the arguement for equal marriage but I think a certain amount of reality has to set in that gays ultimately have to appeal to straight masses in order to pass such legislation and a lot of straights right or wrong have a hang up about the word marriage being applied to same sex couples. Just a thought.

That word works.
