In California, one of the hospitals (El Centro Regional Medical Center - ECRMC) became the third healthcare facility in the US to use a high-tech scan of the veins in the palm of the patients hands to identify and access medical records (this would obviously make paper trail a diminishing aspect). Very informative video. Explained the main concepts of biometrics in a mere 1 and a half minutes. The acceptance of biometrics has been slowly growing by the majority of people. A while ago, Security World News reported on several breakthroughs --

Having biometric integration in all forms of security can be very beneficial. Since you as a person are unique, no other person will have the same combination of face characteristics, hand geometry, hand writing, retina display or voice. The future of security lyes in biometrics.

This reminds me of the 322 project we did last year (BioID) which used iris/finger print scans to provide users with access to their information. Definitely an exciting concept. Marc N 415

My friends laptop has a fingerprint scan on to log on. I never really understood how this worked and how secure it really is. I thought it was only in the movies till I saw the laptop and face recognition on some phones. It seems to work really well because we played around with it and it was not easily fooled. It seems with the technology available now it is easier and less expensive to use biometrics like the fingerprint scan on everyday items like laptops, cellphones etc.

2/2: Having tried the face recognition feature on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, I’ve found it to be extremely reliable, easy, and quick to use (able to recognize faster than the same feature that can be found in a laptop).

1/2: As already mentioned in an earlier comment, biometrics technology has already been extended into the use of fingerprint and face recognition in laptop computers. Therefore, it is of no surprise for phone companies such as, Samsung and Motorola to incorporate this type of technology into their latest mobile phones, namely the face recognition security feature to unlock.

I've found that biometrics had lately been reinforced in many Airports around the world, as well as country borders. When I last visited home, there was what they called to be the "fast track' passport check in, where you basically insert you governmental issued ID card, and scan your thumb to basically pass through passport control.
The U.S and Canada are also seeking to reinforce security and fast check ins by introducing newer means of biometrics at the borders.

From what I understand Biometrics technology became an emerging trend from the post 911 attack. The reasoning behind this is self explanatory; to combat possible terrorist attacks via facial/behavioural/motion/phys
ical recognition practices. However, I do think that this automated technology has limited capabilities. For example, under face recognition surveillance, a person wearing glasses would only hinder the monitor from identifying the person/face. -
If Biometrics provides a non-transferable means to identify people, it will continue to be adopted to relieve privacy concerns. Thanks for putting up this great video, it was very informative.

the audio is OK, but the lighting is poor [my bad], should have had Arie closer to the window - keep this in mind when you are making videos yourself
