"Dream World" (originally "Dream Land") is a song recorded in September 1978 with shared vocals by Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad and solo passage by Agnetha. The song was recorded during sessions for the Voulez-Vous album. Composers Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus decided, however, that "Dream World" was not suitable for release, and instead, agreed to scrap the recording.

The melody and chord sequence of the middle-eight of "Dream World" were re-used, with different lyrics, as the bridge for the middle-eight of the song "Does Your Mother Know," later released as the second single from the Voulez-Vous album.

In the 1980s, the song was heard for the first time in a Swedish radio programme featuring ABBA's engineer Michael B. Tretow, and subsequently found its way onto a bootleg album.

In 1994, "Dream World" was released in Sweden, Germany and Australia as a promotional-only CD-single with other ABBA rarities to advertise the Thank You for the Music four CD box-set, which also contained the track.

The version of the song released in 1994 differs from the version heard in the radio show in that its fairground-like synthesiser intro fades in rather than starting abruptly.

It was reported just before its 1994 release that Benny and Björn were in the studio remixing the track, and hence it is most probably a new mixdown of the song done expressly in 1994. Indeed it exhibits a certain "digital" sound suggesting it was mixed down to a digital recorder as opposed to previously released songs from this period which were mixed onto analog tape.

"Dream World" will be included on the "Voulez-Vous - Deluxe Edition" CD/DVD package, to be released in Sweden on May 31, 2010.

  • In some ways I think it's like Just a Notion, in the sense of much closer to an unbroken melody than an intro/verse/chorus idea. Apart from the relatively poor quality on the broadcast, the EQ seems brighter than on TYFTM 4 CD box - did you change the EQ Rudolf?

  • @windinthew11 The EQ is very sharp yes! It is like this from the bootleg CD. I thought I should EQ it a bit to make it less sharp but then I thought I could be "messing with history" so to speak.

  • Too bad they faded it in in the final mix that came out in 1994 (Thank you for the music box set). I see that this version is from a bootleg CD (too bad no one could hold of better quality, it's got spitting sausage all over it (as Mark Pearce would say)). Have seen it on ebay a couple of times (Tradera actually, Swedish division of ebay)).

  • @GPATRS1 The Voulez-Vous Deluxe edition has an unfaded version of Dreamworld ;-)

  • @mozpiano2 Finally after all these years! But I suspect it will be compressed and horribly loud. To bad it was faded in on TYFTM box set, otherwise we could have it in full and in great quality.

  • @GPATRS1 This is an interesting discussion about the Mastering of the Voulez-Vous Deluxe edition (it is not a 2005 CSR clone) - ww w.iphpbb.com/board/ftopic-30652567nx61610-8968-420.html (remove the space between the w)

  • @GPATRS1 the original tape was partially destroyed

  • Wow, ABBA's wonderful song!!! It makes me dream of a much better world!! In this evil and wicked world, thanks ABBA, sometimes we can see the rainbow of joy and happiness all the same!!!! Thank you ever so much ABBA!! On the 5th of April, Agnetha, the girl with golden hair, will celebrate her birthday: Happy Birthday, Agnetha. Best wishes and ... lycka till!

  • Так понравилась эта песня-недавно открыла ее для себя. Даже не подозревала о ее существовании. Великолепные и запись и исполнение как всегда! АВВА вечные!

  • tolles Lied

  • @mozpiano2 Thanks for the link. Really interesting discussion going o there! After reading it, now I can't wait to get the VV deluxe I've ordered from CDWOW!

  • We are to get the full version without the "fade in" on the new Voulez Vous Deluxe edition CD which is released on 31st May! Looking forward to hearing it.

  • @mozpiano2 My guess (and experience of demos tending to have dull EQ) suggests that perhaps the bootleg authors messed with the EQ.. The other copy I have of this unfaded version has EQ like the TYFTM box and although the start is truncated, it has a fragment of someone speaking (can't make out the language) before it starts, plus crackles not in your version. That "might" suggest it came direct from a broadcast. But I'm glad to have your version with a complete start!
