Rainbow - Visit to a Nudist Camp (1985)

Taken from the 1985 Thames Christmas Tape, this scene shows Rod, Jane and Freddy singing while walking past a nudist camp. Bungle also appears with a bare head in place of his bear head and George has a yellow hand and LEGS!

In this 2003 interview Malcolm Lord who assisted George at the time says...
"We used to do silly things. I remember one time when Rod, Jane and Freddy were doing a song, I'm not sure what it was, but I'm sure it was wonderful because all their stuff is great. The scenery comprised of a privet hedge, they were probably singing about being in a country garden, and Roy, Stanley and I thought it would be funny if we walked along the back with no shirts on and carrying a beach ball. We quickly made up a sign saying 'Nudist Camp' and crawled along behind the hedge, took off our shirts - Roy went one further, but we won't talk about that - put the placard up and they're performing and didn't have a clue what was happening behind them. There we were throwing this beach ball around to each other..."

I do have the complete 1985 Christmas tape. Someone else has already uploaded it to YouTube. Do a search for "Thames Television Christmas Tape 1985" and you should find it. The only other Rainbow related bit is a short clip of Rod, Jane and Freddy in a computer game. Am I right to assume this nudist camp sequence was longer?

More importantly, what magical items do you have in your collection ready to be uploaded to YouTube? I read that your head appeared next to George at the end of your first episode. Do you remember which episode it was? Was there such a thing as a Rainbow outtake or was it all left in the programme?

No. The people you see in the clip are animatronic and cost over £100,000 to make, which was a lot of money in the mid 1980s. £12,000 alone was spent on creating a realistic model of Freddy's hair.

George's yellow hand was edited frame by frame in Photoshop running on a BBC Model B computer. Originally, they wanted to change the colour of both arms, but the first one took over 3 years to complete, so the idea was abandoned.

Still, I'm sure you will agree, money and time well spent.
