European powers competed for control of North and South America in the 1600s. It was not at all clear that England would dominate, or that a country as big as the United States, English speaking and geographically vast, would emerge out of the hodge podge of settlements that began in 1607 in Jamestown, Virginia.

  • I love how the way you put it makes it seem so fair and just. What we actually did was terrible; I studied documents at school of all the shit things we did to those poor guys, like kidnapping their leaders in ransom for gold, converting them all to Christianity then burning them alive anyway. Wow, we were a bunch of scumbags. I hope I don't live to see the next "New World" we discover (on another planet), the shit will be 10 times more terrible.

  • Thanks alot this helped me out a bunch for an essay i had to write.
