I have a question that is somewhat unrelated.
How do people send text messages via cell phone in Chinese?

There are 2 ways. First,your cell phone is installed Chinese system so you can type Chinese characters. Second is you can type "pinyin."

Okay, how does it type charaters? There are a lot and if there was a thing for each charater then that might get kind of complex. It there a wat to type in pinyin and it converst to characters?

Some mobile phones' system can transfer pinyin into Chinese characters. Some transfer the so-called "bo-po-mo-fo" into Chinese characters. Depends on what kind of system your mobile phone has.
