  • @jcorley2710 thats a shame :/

  • Why do you say that Arch is especially good for KDE users? What is so special about KDE in Arch?

  • @invnd1245 KDE is popular with arch because, before KDE was modularized, if you wanted to use KDE, you had to install the whole suite (games, movie players, everything) which made it really bogged down and bloated. so arch users created the kdemod project which modularized everything. this was rad because it meant you could do a minimalistic install of KDE, which was only possible (well, it was only easily done) with arch linux. nowadays it doesnt really matter if you use gnome or kde.

  • I'd like to see you install gentoo.

  • @asfaqqq haha. that's like my nightmare.

  • You seem to be missing the point with Arch Linux. Arch Linux is made for users who want to understand a bit more about how Linux works and do more with their system; Arch Linux is basically for power users. And since you need know how Arch works in order to maintain your system, the console install is the right thing to do since you learn much more about how the system works. With simple GUI installers beginners would be fooled to think that Arch is a beginner-friendly system.

  • Install tutorial / demonstration for Gnome and X on my page if anyone is interested. The installer is great, by the way. GUI installers are horrible.

  • @Rokalacs You just have to make sure you don't touch those partitions (just write down the names of each - Sda1, Sda2 Windows...). I've installed Arch several times in laptops with Windows partitions and I've never had any kind of problems or fear of formatting them.

I actually liked the installer. And I love Arch, my only concern is about the unsigned packages thing. I'm afraid everytime I install/update something, I think this is worse than viruses! I'm thinking about trying Sabayon.

  • archlinux is the greatest curent os. BSd can't match it upgradeability in all binary, and its recent packages, and its ability to compiel all free software, which bsd has problems with at times. lvm2+software raid 10 makes zfs irrelevant. bsd and solaris cant compete arch obsoletes deadrat u bung 2 and dweebian and rest of linuxes you cant upgrade solaris or bsd accross versions in binary; bsd ports cause endless compiles; solaris unstable due to patching and bloat, linux better threads

  • The GUI install defeats the purpose of Arch Linux.

  • are you using chakra?

  • First time took me 4 hours with gnome ,but it was worth it. then the second go round was 2 hours to install with KDE. I loved the experience but have at least 6 months of some Linux(Ubuntu) and command line experience, so you don't feel completely lost.

  • @jcorley2710 not true, i've been using it for the last 6 months, not problem whatsoever

  • "The install for Arch Linux is absoloutely stupid" If you think like this then I very much doubt arch is the distro for you. Maybe try ubuntu..

  • I have archlinux, and sometimes it randomley makes 4 new unaccesable desktop screens, i can see them by pressing CTRL + ALT + left mouse click and hold + drag mouse, or CTRL + ALT + back arrow and I can see smaller desktop windows but I cant use them, i want this to stop. any ideas? terminal? configuration?

  • The installer is great except the partitioner. It can't modify any ntfs partitions but formating them. I have 2 of them one for win7 and the other one is for all my data. When I installed arch I crossed my fingers a hundred times for not to format any of those partitions even accidentally. Imo it should've a GUI installer from live cd for example and then come back to the bash, it could really save time.

  • @asfaqqq Ha. I tried a week ago. Never again.
