Ever studied German? I did together with those on the group of six still from Lewis School Pengam, Wales. We were taught by the literary and musical MI Morgan who loved Germany and its culture. The outdoor group photo is from the Koenigswinter trip of 1956. Included are John Dawes OBE (JD) and (Lord) Neil Kinnock (NK), future leader of the UK Labour Party then Vice-President of the European Commission. I composed this ten (?) bar blues in 2007 using ideas from the fifties. We boys used to sing silly German Blues eg "I've got the: 'Geben Sie die richtige Form des Verbs' blues". Ich hatte vor vielen Jahren als Schueler Deutsch studiert - sicher nicht perfekt aber mein Schubert und Mozart auf You Tube sind ziemlich beliebt.

I got the deutsche blues - cain't git (get) my Woerter right.
I'm workin' all the day and drinkin' half the night
I got the zehn bar blues & so I wrote this song
I git my Anfang right, but still the Ende's wrong
Please help me to lose those morgen frueh zehn bar blues!
I got the deutsche blues - they really spoil my day
They're givin' me such Angst, I'll never get an 'A'
I got the zehn bar blues - they make me lose my voice
Herr Morgan's Geist he said 'mein Sohn - you got no choice'
So I can only choose nur die morgen frueh zehn bar blues.
I got the deutsche blues - mein Leben's all kaputt
My diet's gone to seed, I'm full of Sauerkraut
I got the zehn bar blues - my life is in decay
No matter how I try, they never go away
Baby I'll never lose those morgen frueh zehn bar blues
Those zehn bar blues - yeh.

  • Thanks, Anna. In reality we enjoyed German, having chosen it ahead of History. Two boys studied it further to18 and one took a good degree in German. What I learned has been essential for a classical singer. Herr Morgan was an inspiring teacher. He was also fluent in Welsh and conducted the school orchestra. But his degree was in History!

  • Thank you, David! It was very interesting to read along! Heehee, it's nice to get this glimpse of how terrible learning German must be for poor non-native speaking students! ^,^

  • Thanks Anna - we were a little crazy then. I will add the words for you now.

  • Haha, this sounds so weird! Could you please put the lyrics in the description box, I couldn't understand everything!

    You are very inventive, indeed!

  • Thanks Eliana - I composed this for my old friends, especially those in our high school German class. Neil Kinnock (NK on 1956 KoenigsWinter photo) became Vice-President of the European Commission.

  • great video!
