The reason why they left the baby in the water for a long time is for the parents to grasp the fact that they could be in there longer then you think. But that they still know what to do. Say, a canoe with a father and baby son in it tips over. The father gets knocked out cold & the baby is floating on the water. It could be an hour before help comes.
