MSU Students Advancing International Development was founded in Fall 2009 as a continuation of two Study Abroad trips throughout India in 2008 and 2009. Many of the students felt a need to remain connected to those we had met, learned from, and worked alongside in India. While in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu completing a multi-day practicum in integrated human development, we met the potential beneficiaries of work we could do from the United States upon our return.
Children under five in India are vulnerable to a fatal case of measles that can be easily prevented by a simple vaccination, costing the equivalent of about $2. The country is the last remaining hotspot for measles in the world. Our experiences in India undeniably revealed both the responsibilities and opportunities we have in working towards the elimination of this needless travesty. After working with an NGO in Coimbatore called Shanti Ashram, we established an initiative to raise $16,000 in order to fund the MMR vaccinations of 8,000 children, effectively eradicating measles in the area.
