This video is of myself, Andy Krauss, sailing an outrigger canoe in the Majuro lagoon, in the Marhsall Islands. I am steering and you'll also see local sailor Davis handling the sail. These canoes were built by a vocational program called WAM. I highly recommend sailing one of these if you are in Majuro, it's only $20US for one adult for an hour+. Some of the trainee's aren't too comfortable with their English so ask questions. Steering isn't too tricky, so ask if you can steer on your way back. This size boat is suitable for 2-4 people (you'll need at least one but should probably have two experienced local sailors). They also have a bigger canoe suitable for 7-9 people that will require a crew of about 3 locals. 9 would be a bit crowded. The smaller canoe can easily cruise at 7 knots, I've recorded a maximum speed of 12.9 knots on a moderately windy day. This day we were averaging around 9 knots.
Honestly they are so fast as a native I know they can go fast as 60 knot. They even won the all pacific canoes race in 1992. I miss home, used to sailed with my grandpa and fishing.. Ahahah iakwe wot Jo tore ko !! :)
