First try testing out the Canon 60D at the beach.

I failed miserably but really not as bad as I thought I would.

Shot at high noon (worst time to shoot)
Forgot to change my WB (tungsten)

  • @EZA757 Well I've been trying different ways. A lot of the shots in this video I estimated where the wave would be breaking, focused and then waited until he came into the dof. The other day the waves weren't breaking in a consistent spot. Some of the rides were very long so I tried to follow along with the focus. You have to find the focus as quick as possible. As for zoom, I only touch it before or after never really during a shot (I have but I plan on cutting out the actual zoom in post)

  • I was thinking about getting a Z-finder for that same purpose because that LCD itself doesn't stand a chance when your in bright sun. How do you prefer to shoot? Like do you keep a set focus and frame in whenever someone comes into the DOF? I keep getting the idea that my DSLR is my Camcorder when really, it doesn't allow me to quickly refocus everything as I'm constantly zooming in and out.

  • @DavideoDesign I would definitely recommend the Z-finder. Especially if you shoot outdoors where it could be very bright. The magnification helps you see more of the details on the LCD and which makes it a lot easier to get a good focus.

I have the Z-finder pro and the best part is that it's not one of those viewfinders that you have to use an adhesive in order to stick on your LCD, it's easy to put on and take off due to the attachment to the tripod mount under the camera. WELL WORTH IT!

  • Wow I think it looks great man I felt jelous that you was on that beautiful sun kissed beach and I am stuck in the miserable grey weather in the UK haha, I have same cam too and really struggle with the focus am about to get a Tokina 11-16mm for wides , so do you recommend the Z-finder then? as am sersiously thinking of getting one over the next few days

  • @EZA757 Yeah it's tough but hopefully if I get it down it'll be worth it. Follow focus is a good idea I was thinking about that when I took the camera out on this day. I also have a zacuto z finder attached to the LCD so it's a lot easier to see when things are even a little out of focus. Thanks

  • It's tough to learn. I'm still trying to get it down on my T2i. I need to invest in a follow focus to make smoother in & out transitions. But I think I might stick with my Canon HV30 to shoot skiming and leave the T2i for less action. I think as a first test you did pretty good. Keep it up
