This is a quick tutorial on the usage of the classic ADSR envelope inside a synthesizer. Visit us at http://www.synthschool.com to learn more.

What is an envelope? What does ADSR stand for? If you want to learn more, or download the application to tweek its knobs yourself, go to http://www.synthschool.com and check out our downloads section. It is full of free music software!

p.s. sorry about the editing glitches... having some weird bugs with my editing software.

  • Great video!

But one question: At the end, you show that the Release starts from the previous level in the envelope. Is the Release time still the same or does it change with the level it starts (looks like this in the animation)? In other words, is the R parameter actually a Release angle or really the time span (or are both models rational)? I would think that the release of a quiet note would take less time than from a loud note.

You have a point there. most envelopes are speed based, which means that the release will be shorter if it starts from a lower level. Some envelopes however are based on time, which means that the release will take the same time to fade out regardless of its starting position. Both ways are viable, but the speed based is more natural and common. however, sometimes natural is not what one is looking for ;)

  • @SynthSchool GREAT VIDEO

just one question at the end you state that the release starts from where the envelope was when you left the note. so if you play a short note and it never reaches its maximum of the attack does it still jump right to the release especially if you have the decay at 100% OR will it still have to go through the decay?

  • i know this stuff but it's a great tutorial!
