until taiwan is phyiscally or diplomatically taken over by the mainland, it is independent. Taiwan didn't secede from china, therefore its hardly debatable. It's as ridiculous to say taiwan is not independent as it is to say china is not independent.

let me jus put it to u this way, if u was taiwan, and south taiwan wanted independence from ur taiwan, would allow that? would AMERICA allow a divided north and south? the difference is that the govt of taiwan militarily controls both NORTH and SOUTH taiwan, mainland china's military doesn't control, nor have they ever controlled the island taiwan. Until they do, independence is legitimate. When america split, the south had its own army and kicked the north out until they lost the war. Yes, it took a war and military conquest to reclaim sovereignty over the south. That is the difference.
