Tall Man Five Five was the callsign of the B-58 that won the Bendix Trophy Race (against another B-58, Tall Man Five Six). Chet Huntley narrates this film about that flight.

An interview with one of the crew members can be found here:

  • Man! Four, count 'em FOUR fully augmented J-79 turbojets! The F-4 only had 2! All hung in prominent nacelles under that sleek area ruled airframe! This was no lumbering ordinance hauler, NO, you strapped this thing on like a fighter, cobbed those throttles into afterburner and lived the Promise of The JET AGE!

  • This is a video about SAC and the cold war...so WTF are you people doing? Go get laid.

  • @bigisezhi Have you checked out Phil Rowe's stuff on the Hustler? Superb- and great stories, too.

  • Glorious Classic stuff. THIS is the America I miss so badly. Just born too damn late.

  • @seanmillerr Mach 2 (1350 mph)..well before Concorde

  • what was it's top speed.? the film seem's to be before concord was built.

  • @ollenhauer1 Das ist sicher aber die Deutsche Soldat ist nicht so schlecht nicht wahr?

  • @cgf2100 Strategic Air Command put the THUNDER and LIGHTNING in the metallic glove of an entire THIRD of the NUCLEAR TRIAD for DECADES! Few if any can comprehend the burden of a near eternal standby that these intrepid souls did. I got just TWO words for those piddling pups who might besmirch the SAC, Operation Chrome Dome! 'NUFF SAID!

AND, thank you, cgf2100, for your service to this great country! :D

  • @bigisezhi Nice comment. I saw the last of the B-58's just after I graduated tech school. They were nice looking, but sat in the hanger more than they flew. If they made them today, the new composites, and more reliable parts, they would be an awesome bird. Too bad they spent so much money on the plastic wings of the B-2.

  • Peace is our Profession, war is just a hobby.

  • the most beautiul looking aircraft in the SAC inventory I've been an aviation buff since I was 5 years old!!

  • Grew up a military brat....Dad was in SAC....cherished memories!
