Andrew Copson interviews Natalie Haynes prior to the BHA Voltaire Lecture 2011, on the subject of her talk "What the Romans and Greeks did for us: how Ancient History makes our lives better".
She opposes the idea of "paying to getting the best person for the job", fair enough, but this cannot be applied to MPs in isolation: if people working for business are paid much more, they will wait to get their "real" pay after they've finished in parliament. Cutting MPs pay is a recipe for corruption, as is *not* cutting business leaders' ridiculous levels of pay (through taxation). Very short terms could be interesting, but I think they would be exploited fairly quickly.
I learned about world history, b.c.e. times, mesopotamia. I'd never heard of all this stuff when I was in the public school. the kids really miss out on understanding y the middle east is such a powder keg and y europe was in the middle ages but that many innovations came from egypt, india, and the middle east. the intelligence of this region in those days is being hidden from kids. it does them a huge disservice.
I listened to the Pod Delusion Extra podcast of Natalie Haynes' talk. In fact I listened to it again a week later, it's that good! ...and I've bought the book, which is brill, very much along the lines of the talk, but more so. Recommended.
Yay! I can proffer up the first vulgar comment. Natalie's goddamn hot.
