Going through the monster is known as a "booey". You have to be going toward one head-on, and your timing has to be perfect. Your mathematical position on the board (and the postion of the monster) is only one pixel. Only one character moves at a time, usually one pixel, but occasionally two, to allow for slightly higher/lower speeds. If your pixel is advanced 2 spaces when adjacent to a monsters pixel, it will "jump" it, allowing you to move "through" it.

It has happened to me many times before it is only a glitch and as far as ps1 is concerned a bug like this cannot be fixed with an update unfortunately.
