How to make Small Talk: The Art of Schmoozing

Schmoozing is the art of making small talk. It's more important than you realize. Every relationship begins with smalltalk.

So, believe it or not - you can prepare for it.

- Do your homework - know who will be attending.
- Research all you can about the people you will meet.
- You can find this information from corporate liturature, on the internet, annual reports, business magazines and business networking sites such as linkedin.
- When meeting a person of influence, find something powerful to ask or say.
- Look for non-verbal signals that show that individual is prepared to engage in small talk.
- Research at least five topics that enable you to start a conversation with anyone, i.e., sports, travel, current events, travel, entertainment and human interest.
- Ask questions about the individual. Avoid topics such as politics, racial issues, religion and abortion.
