Hi, I'm Dave Weiner. I'm a Favored Nations recording artist, a G.I.T. graduate and have been playing in Steve Vai's band since 1999.

Every Wednesday I do a new Riff Of The Week™ guitar education video. Here's Season 3, Episode 39 "Ear Training Zen"

Don't forget to view the tab, listen to the audio clips and download the backing tracks (when applicable) for this ROTW at: www.daveweiner.com/rotw.

You can find Hi-RES HD versions of this video at riffoftheweek.com or by subscribing (for free) to the ROTW podcast in ITunes (search Dave Weiner).

Interested in my music? My first cd "Shove The Sun Aside" is available on iTunes, Amazon and at www.daveweiner.com/store

Like this lesson? Want to learn more? How about a live, one on one, internet guitar lesson with me? www.daveweiner.com/lessons

Got a suggestion for a ROTW? Email it to rotw@daveweiner.com

Thanks for visiting. Enjoy!

  • lol i was at a show with mike stern in toronto and they were playing a bluesy jam when the city hall bells started ringing due to the time being 11 o clock... and it was in the right key... so they started improvising with the droning of the bell

  • Haha :D Thank you for your hard work. Keep it up.

  • SUCH good tone...

  • nice story xD

    did steve beat mcalpine? ojhojhdsjhahaha

thanks for the lesson dave ;)

  • LOL!!!!!

    the best ROTW

  • I find that watching myself play in a mirror has the same effect oddly enough. I'm not sure why, maybe it's because I'm watching and listening to myself play as would someone else. What's strange is that it's the complete opposite technique that Dave demonstrates, closing the eyes, as you're actually watching yourself.

  • Hilarious Dave.

    And great tip.

    I'll try to put up

    a video response.

  • This was a great ROTW Dave. I've been working on stuff like that to get a nice warm clean solo to incorporate the low B on the seven string. The story was hilarious too.

  • Very funny story Dave!

Although you don't need perfect pitch to play that tune :P

The technique you demonstrated is a very clever and efficient way to train your ear's. Well done on another great lesson Dave. 5 Stars.
