Visiting German craftsmen Michail Schütte and Hannes Schnelle made this small timber frame building for us as a log and bicycle store. The end will have weather boards to protect it from the prevailing wind and for the moment it will just have a galvanised sheet roof. Once we have the time and money it will be topped with a shingle roof.

  • wow!!- robin, i can't believe it took just two weeks to build it- you must have worked hannes and michael like slaves!!!

a fantastic job by true craftsmen- well done...

    john...

  • 7 working days actually and that included the first 2 days making trestles and doing the foundations so it was really only 5 days framing. They are incredibly efficient but yes hardworking too. We still had time for plenty of spooncarving in the evenings, pub visits, bands, forging tools, bowlturning and a trip to Wales, it was a busy time but very very enjoyable.

  • very impressive, :0)

  • and fun

  • Beautiful frame, a couple of questions. What are the trunnels made of?

What sort of joint was used on the tie beams between the outer walls...a dovetail?

  • I had to google trunnels which shows how much I know about timber frames, the pegs/trunnels are cleft oak dried for a few days over the fire until they made a nice ringing sound when tapped together.

The tie beams sit on top of the wall plates and are dovetailed into them.
