I agree it's ridiculous someone would be upset whenever you make a mistake. The process of acquiring any skill entails making mistakes. In fact, the sheer fact people don't expect anyone to make a mistake is ridiculous. I wouldn't worry, though. These people are usually the most jealous and/or angry about their own, personal failures. I would know, because I used to be that way myself.

When learning another language, one needs all the help and tips one can get and those who learn usually have enough gratitude and decentcy to try and give back and share advice with others. Those who advance in ability are the people who have the balls to speak without fear of making mistakes and who learn from those mistakes. Regarding Mr. Critical Aussie...let me state my opinion in the first foreign language I learned: At-whay an Ick-day!

Who the hell doesn't make mistakes along the way. Hell, people make mistakes in their native languages. Surely the point is that you are learning from them, in order to get better? Who on earth learns a new language perfectly first time. Utter madness.
What could show greater respect for a language than investing time and effort in learning to speak it?
