Social Democracy/Democratic Socialism is not some evil system -- it's probably the only system which treats humanity with dignity and respect, rather than recognizing them only as robotic consumerists.
Yes, Sweden did take part in forced sterilizations during the early 20th century, but so did America and many other countries during that time. It was sort of a fad then. But really, do you think they do that now? Get real.

I'm Finnish, and today I'm witnessing the slow tearing down of our social democratic system for the benefit of privatizing of former communal and state services.
Social democracy is what lifted my country into what it is today. We reached a peak in terms of financial equality in the late 80's, but it has decreased since. We are still one of the socially most equal contries in the world along with the rest of scandinavia, and I hope we can preserve it.

@ddd82451 Sweden is dying
In order to have strong welfare system... you need young and productive people... which Sweden DONT have.
Most of the native swedes are old, there are few new-born swedes.
Immigrants demanding welfare and old swedes demanding also money... they can't have in the year 2020... there will be noone to pay for their demands

Sweden... land of the suicide males (the highest levels of suicides and teen suicides)\
Sweden... the land of rabid anti-jewish racism and Islamic conservatism
Sweden ... where the gender war already started ;)

@HammarnUT Not so much trusting the leaders, but people trusting each other...

There is no appeal of socialism whatsoever. There is private ownership, commodity production, wage labour, etc. It's capitalist.

@ddd82451 Mayby so but thats up to the voters in the US..not the little swedes to tell 300million people in the US what to do and how to live their lives..
-
@ddd82451 That is up to the US-voters..not swedish politicians or left wing journalists..they are not us-policy makers.

@PsychoPunk1965 Really?..is this why swedish professionals are so poor and highly taxed?..Olof Palme and Goran Persson where highly intolerant rulers..the S-party historia is full of crimes(Baltutlamningne 1946,tvangssterilisering=Inga Thorsson, support of the khmer rouge=Birgitta Dahl, support to Fidel Castro=Olof Palme...S-party=totalitarian one-party state for 70years. Unfortunately globalisation and no-governmenttal media has broken the S-patys monopoly on power and media.
The Swedish Social Democratic Party are not the evil tyrants this right-wing nut claims. While being for economic statism in the form of democratic socialism (which made Sweden have one of the highest standards of living in the world), the Swedish Social Democratic Party has been the highest proponents of civil liberties.

@PsychoPunk1965 Considering that the Social Democrats have been responsible for forcibly sterilizing a larger portion of the country's population than any other society in the western world; massive registration of political opponents; incarceration in concentration camps of thousands of people during WW2; and child custody laws that make it so easy for the state to snatch children - I'm afraid that I'll have to point out that the Swedish Social Democrats are true fascists.

Why is the appeal of socialism so strong in the Scandinavian countries?

I attribute it to a homogenous population. All countries that have had that have embraced socialism, since the people trust leaders that are of their own kind. In the USA with its diversity, the opposite is true, of course.
