Rhapsody in C Major, Op. 11, No. 3, by Ernö Dohnányi. Played by pianist Evan Chow, age 16, on May 29, 2010.
Hungarian composer Ernö Dohnányi (1877-1960) wrote Four Rhapsodies, Op. 11, in 1903, publishing them under his German name, Ernst von Dohnányi. One of his two sons, Hans, was brother-in-law to Dietrich Bonhoeffer and a leader of the anti-Nazi resistance in Germany. Hans was later executed for being part of a plot to assassinate Hitler. After World War II, Dohnányi moved to the United States, where he became fascinated by American folk music and jazz. He taught for ten years at Florida State University's School of Music, which hosts a large archive of his manuscripts today. Dohnányi also recorded a number of works, including Beethoven and Schubert piano sonatas. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ern%C5%91_Dohn%C3%A1nyi.

Impressive. I'm working on this piece now and the hardest part is the physical navigation around the keyboard, which you seemed to nail. Congrats! This is a helpful and enjoyable performance.

Evan,
We heard you today at the University of Pacific and thought you played wonderfully. I spoke to you briefly about how you seemed to really enjoy playing Etude, Opus 40, #7: Intermezzo. Well done!
