received my training and counseling certificate (CTC) from the Academy for Dog Trainers (known as the Harvard of dog training schools) at the SPCA in San Francisco, CA. Under the direction of Jean Donaldson, trainer extraordinaire and author of Culture Clash and Dogs are from Neptune, I developed a strong sense of how dogs think and what methods work best. Working with several shelter dogs on obedience and behavioral issues strengthened my resolve to become a professional trainer and work with owners to keep their dogs where they belong, in their homes, instead of relinquishing them to shelters or tossing them on the street

  • why is this dog on a prong collar? Especially at the end of the clip it concerns me. Aggression begets aggression and although there are no sharp corrections and I assume intentions of harm, you can still classically condition fear and discomfort which will elevate arousal, anxiety, or frustration. Why not consider conditioning to a head collar or front clip harness instead? The Gentle Leader products give far better control with no aversion IF used correctly.

  • @CaninePawsAcademy

This is a NYC shelter dog and she was told by staff use prong collar.

she does not like using them at all.

  • this trainer sucks this dog is out of control and is obveous is the pack leader watch cesar milan my freind and learn how to be the pack leader

  • @badabingrockford you dont know shit.

Cesar Milan scares the animals its called negative reinmforcement. Carol uses postitive reinforcement.. takes more time to work but much better then what Cesar does. Most American Idiots like what Cesar does... I would not let him near my dog. So before you open your fat mouth maybe learn more about other peoples techniques.

  • You are right, Jean would not approve. A question: you say you didn't have time to gather the right equipment, but you had a bait bag and treats, why not carry appropriate equipment like gentle leaders or premier martingales so that you are prepared when faced with a dog who is wearing a pain collar? If you were forced to use the prong to "control" him, using pain/startle, you would reinforce his idea that whatever he wanted to bite really was dangerous and should be driven away.

  • You do have a good point. Using a prong collar is not something I encourage or recommend to my clients. It was an unfortunate situation but my methods are humane and I never do anything to hurt the dog or make the situation worse. Hope this helps.

  • @stevepozz Wow. I have to honestly say this is a very curious video and comments. I will say this, you were very brave for posting the video. I work with shelter dogs as a volunteer, so I understand your situation some what. However, prongs are not allowed at our shelter. I think you did take a risk even if it wasn't your choice. You risked your certification IMO. I wonder if Donaldson ever came across this. Don't worry, I'm not like some of these others accusing you of anything. Just surprised.

  • You go CAROL!

  • choke or pinch collars are not designed to hurt there for irritation purposes just like an electric collar. nobody who loves dogs wants to hurt our canine friends.

  • Thanks for the reply -- glad to know you didn't intend to use the prong collar as it is designed to be used. There can never be enough good dog trainers who use humane, science-based methods, and the fact that you learned from Jean Donaldson shows that you are one of those trainers. Keep up the good work!
