Why didn't they do Night Comfort Theater on Sunday nights, and go off the air (or usually just run bars and tone) instead? Of course I'm sure everyone watching knows you need a blue filter to use color bars to properly set the color.

That was a lonely feeling when 40 would sign off Sunday night. They had to do things like transmitter maintenance, and Sunday night was the most logical time.
The main problem with local TV these days is that programs and movies that were commonplace on "regular" TV back then, have become exclusive to specialty cable and satellite channels like AMC, TCM and TV Land.
It isn't possible for local stations to run films like "The Maltese Falcon" anymore, so current management can't be faulted.
