Sandy Lenz, a wonderfully athletic skater with stretched line and super flow, was a third generation Rockford (Rockton), Illinois prodigy from the Wagon Wheel factory! A great deal of skating talent, including many current coaches, were nurtured and educated there. Unfortunately, it burned down about this time period and was not replaced there at the traditional winter resort site!! Rockford has a great, modern rink....beautifully situated on the riverbank. But the tradition blazed by Janet Lynn, Kath Malmberg, and Sandy Lenz seems to have faded.

Sandy would make an effort for a national title in 1981, but much like Lisa Marie Allen, her free skate misfired.....and Elaine Zayak surged to the fore!!!!

  • Boy was she robbed here... she should have been placed 3rd for sure in this portion ... they were always holding skaters back...then... but she really sold this program !If she had done a triple in combo I would have said she should have won !

  • Sometimes the satisfaction is only in the doing......we all still remember Sandy, and this exciting evening....best wishes thanks for commenting.

  • This was the best SP in the whole event!

  • I couldn't agree more!! best wishes

  • That is a joke! I think we got a hint of why the low scores when Mr. Button explains it was her first major international competition. There probably is a pecking order based on previous reputations and lobbying among the judges with each other. The thing is so corrupt; the saga of the French judge at the 2002 Olympic Games shouldnt have come as a surprise.

  • Yes.......and there doesn't seem to be a good way to fix it. This new points system just seems to be destroying interest in the event. The 2010 Olympic ice dance could be pivitol, if all skate well. I don't see the Russians "letting go" of this contest. But we shall see............it will be important that it as least seems fair!! There is a long list of skaters who were 'disappointed' in their placements! best wishes

  • sandy was pure classic scotvold......Evy and Mary had such a major stable between the mid 70's and mid 80's this was a golden time before the nancy/paul era....from Terry Kubicka who won freeskating at worlds and did the first 3 lutz and back flip to David Santee to Sandy....

  • If I was a judge I would give her 5.8 technical and 5.9 artistic. I would have her 1st place in the short program.

  • Gorgeous! What a beautiful layback at the end.

  • Love Sandy and love this program. Does anyone know the music she uses for her slow part at the beginning? i've been searching for it forever. Thanks for posting.

  • Thanks for the correction... I am not sure where I got the 12th place number from......old memory, or perhaps a television commentator mistake. best wishes

  • Actually she was placed 6th in the short program behind Fratianne, Biellman, Marie Allen, Poetzsch and Lurz. Still too low though. She really should have been in 1st place in the short program!
