Seven people die in Cairo's historic Islamic quarter when the roof of building they were sleeping in collapses.

Another fatal building collapse in Egypt's capital.

Seven bakery workers died in the early hours of Wednesday in Cairo's historic Islamic quarter when the roof of the building they were sleeping in collapsed on top of them .

Neighbors said they rushed to the scene after being woken by a loud noise when the roof fell in.

Rescue workers struggled to navigate the narrow alleyways of the impoverished neighborhood.

Locals had pulled many of the victims out of the rubble before the authorities arrived.

[Zeinhom Husseeing Morsi, Local Resident]:
"We heard at around three in the morning, a big noise in the area, and by the time we ran here, and we came to find out what happened, we saw a roof hanging without support and there were people who had been sleeping here-- bakery workers who had no place to live. So the landlord put up a roof over them, but the wall collapsed on them."

Wednesday's collapse occurred in the Darb-al Ahmar area, home to a number of historically important mosques.

Many local residents blame renovation work on nearby antiquity sites for the repeated damage to local housing.

In a nearby alleyway, a number of people have been sleeping in the street for several days after the upper floor of their apartment building recently caved in.

One of those made homeless said they just want a safe place to live.

[Tarek Abdullah Amin, Displaced from His Home]:
"We want, for these elderly people sitting here, to move to a safe place to live in, a place like one that anyone else has, in safety. In the end we only have what God decides."

Building collapses are common in Egypt because of generally lax building standards and poor maintenance-- at least six people were killed earlier this month when a four floor building collapsed in Cairo's Shubra neighborhood.

Egyptian authorities said an investigation has been launched into Wednesday's building collapse.
