I suppose the only reason im biased is due to the fact that our conductor has a way of being one sided towards string players. he doesnt even take the time to differentiate between different parts of the string section where as he notes every individual part of the brass section. i get annoyed because he'll pick on the strings for something as small as the end of a joined note but when the brass are completely out of time he just ignores it. so yeah basically my conductor is a pain in the neck.
lol. Well, there are some inherent problems that come from mixing strings and brass: when the temperature changes, brass and strings have the opposite reaction. If it's cold, a brass instrument contracts making the diameter of the airway bigger (because the walls of the horn contract) making them flat, and the strings get effectively smaller in diameter making them sharp. So brass blame strings, and strings blame brass. It's great fun.
tbh everytime i've rehersed (i play double bass in the string section of an advanced orchestra), the brass seem to have indemic problems with everything from tuning to rhythm. i think that it's probably just a generic difficulty that becomes more pronounced, the more stress you put on the section.

why are woodwinds always so much better than the brass section?
