My coming to grips with the idea that songwriting means making an attempt to accommodate the tastes of others.
AND yeah - there's more to the story, some of it posted on my blog at MySpace - but for now - here's the lyrics:

What it Takes:

VERSE1
The static conventions took the lines in my mind
The letting go process was a brand-new design
You're hurting the heart at the very core of my being
The beat will be better with my absence maligned

The money meant nothing 'til you made it all gone
You enabled the soul here that I owned all along
The world is cruel and has a hard way of seeing
My life will be brilliant in a story and song

Refrain:
I've arrived in the time where I will do what it takes -
To please you again

VERSE2
The little things matter when the macro is broke
Your temper betrayed you in the language you spoke
I listened inside of me and the heart-beat was wrong
You played out our plans like you were unwinding rope

Your network connection killed the life in the rock
And meaningless lyrics are hiding a dangerous thought
Your judgment won't know me from the lines of a song
We're all nods and smiles whiles we're bleeding in shock

Refrain:
I've arrived in the time where I will do what it takes -
To please you again

Break:
You think you're so precious
With such a long way to go
Yes, you are delicious
I only wish I didn't know

VERSE3
The lessons are many for the seeker of truth
I left an impression in the artifacts of proof
If it's about ego - I'll guess that I'm guilty too
Deny me your morals while I'm calling you uncouth

The laundry-line lighter in the wake of you gone
I held up a blank-hand to the onslaught of calm
Clever with rhythm and rhyming and heartbroken blue
Yet here I am singing like the change is my song

Refrain:
I've arrived in the time where I will do what it takes -
To please you again

  • There are always options. Nice song.

  • @gringochucha Gracias.

  • This is SICK....oh, I mean SIC! hahaha. Hey..anyone tell you you style a bit like John Sebastion? Better though! Not so much voice.. more the.body moves. This is a cool ORIGINAL piece Bugs! 5 stars...more if they'd let me!

  • Thanks KD, I just entered it in a song contest where I KNOW the judges are supposed to look closely at the lyrics & I have some concerns how it will be interpreted... OTOH I half-way don't care if it gets me an award - I just WANT the judges to HAVE to read my lyrics & maybe THINK for a moment or two.

  • pretty cool, dude. Wasn't sure what to expect at first, but the song, lyrics, music, etc. grew on me as it went on and I think it is great. good job!

  • Gratitude for the honesty, friend! I'll get to your page later today, as best as time allows. DAMN busy these days...

  • Wow. Got seriously going on this one. How many cameras do you own anyway? I'm a little lower on the production ladder from you but I hope you enjoy some of my writing. Very fine work here.

  • This really is a great fucking song once I caught-on to it. Fantastic cadence to the melody 1/2 way through the verse. A rhythm dancers would absolutely have to dance to. I like the chromatic lines that close the accordian solo. The guitar solo contrasts. But really this song needs none of the above really. It is so perfectly written just stripped down to it's purest from. That's what I strive to do: Write the perfect song. Fuck Progressive Rock! You're kidding me? That crap leads to the abbiss.

  • Sic, sick, sikh.... no matter how you put it.... this is ULTRA COOL Doug!! ~Kenn

  • nice song - love it love the accordian

  • This has become a "hit" song for me now Doug. Haha... I've heard it as "kingdominium" (KD), MaxLoops and now..well... ME! For some reason it took me 'til now to realize what a kicin' job you did on the video portion. Really appreciate the time and effort!! ~Kenn King

  • Nice production and I really like the way you sell the song. Great delivery. Must admit that without a lyric sheet I would have been lost. As song one would have to listen to a lot of times to get all it has in it. Sort of like a good book eh? Enjoyed.... and yes, Pat Donohue is great... and Tommy Emmanuel, Tuck Andreas & Bill Frisell just to name a few. Smiles from here. 5*****

  • Ya... like MaxLoops said....SIC, or Sick, or Sikh....haha. Nice tune man!
