I have a key (like a map) in the front of my binder and it shows what it means like: Pencil: headings Black pen: General Idea Red pen: Important person/place/event/date Blue pen: big idea/recurring theme Pink Highlighter: due dates/test days Green Highlighter: study me blue highlighter: put me on a flash card yellow highlighter: memorize me gold underline: I am very important blue underline: You have no idea what I mean, do you? purple underline: You can study me is you want... Yup...OCDFTW!<3

ah, not at all, i should have addressed that.

one easy way to start is to write everything in one color of pen (say blue or black). the point of color coding notes is to highlight key points to distinguish the important facts from the less necessary things you might write down. so whatever you think is important, highlight or underline in a different color. for example, highlight topics and headings, so you can find things easier, as well as concepts or definitions.
