@bigdjindustriez "incorrect actually. this song was written by the late Tommy Makem"
No, he actually IS pretty correct. Makem said he learned it from his mother. It was recorded as "My Bonnie Irish Lass", 1934. Search Youtube and find it here.
It probably WAS written in early 1930's, at LATEST. So it IS about 100 years old.
The melody's from "The Bonnie Bonnie Banks Of Loch Lomond", mid 1740's. The melody was changed to a slightly less-dark Irish character and given new lyics.

@celticshane "but Tommy definetly wrote the lyrics of Red Is The Rose"
Search Youtube for 'MY BONNIE IRISH LASS' , listen to that 1934 recording (when Tommy was 1 year old) and see how strongly you still hold that opinion...
Someone took the 1740's melody of Loch Lomond, modified it very slightly, and wrote the lyrics Makem uses, probably shortly before he was born.
All he did was sing the song he learned from his mother, and popularize it.

@bigdjindustriez "incorrect actually."
No, actually pretty correct. "My Bonnie Irish Lass" right here on YouTube, was recorded in 1934, when Makem was one year old, and is the original.
He said he learned it from his mother, and that is likely the very the recording SHE learned it from.
The melody's taken from the MUCH older Scottish song, "The Bonnie Bonnie Banks Of Loch Lomond", and is close enough it to EASILY be mistaken as identical. Loch Lomond dates to the 1740's.

Tommy admitted a few years back that he did not write 'Red Is The Rose' , I beleive the song dates way back before Tommy was born.
Tommy said he learned the song from his mother.

Tommy may have heard his mother sing an old Scottish air but Tommy definetly wrote the lyrics of Red Is The Rose
